Take your schooling, and I’m sure after 5 minutes of thinking about your memories of all those past lessons; you will see that the things you remember have very little to do with helpfulness or importance
My memory is particularly useless! So; I can recall about 3 facts from school, which is kinda dire when you consider the number of years we all spend there
One day my teacher read a letter to the class. It was from a Mother, describing why little Johnny was too ill to come to school
Johnny had a dose of diarrhoea and after 3 goes at spelling diarrhoea, all crossed out a bit like this
The Mother gave up trying to spell it correctly, and under the scribbled out attempts, she wrote – ‘The Shits’ 🙂 Oh how this tickled me…
Then; our task for the lesson was to find a way to remember how to spell diarrhoea…I decided to make a rhyme; each word beginning with the appropriate letters (in order)
I guess I was between 10 and 12 years old, when I made up this little ditty…and for some reason I’ve never forgotten it. As yet, I haven’t found any need to use it since that day; so there’s another point to our education system, for another ‘mostly useless fact’ instilled into my ‘ickle sponge like brain, as a child!
I also know that there is a road called Cucumber Lane in Beccles, and WAIT FOR IT…BODMAS in maths stands for brackets, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction, in that order; should you need to process an algebraic equation. Much like diarrhoea…Cucumber Lane and Bodmas have also served no actual purpose in my adult life YET!!!! I remain grateful and forever indebted to my inspiring educators for my 3, truly awe-inspiring snippets of knowledge!
